Felt stick puppets are easy to make at home with whatever you have lying around. It’s a perfect way to utilize some of those assorted loose parts, and the outcome is a valuable tool for play and storytelling—a puppet!

Materials

  • Stiff felt
  • Odds and ends from around your house (use what you have). We used: googly eyes, pom poms, yarn, fabric scraps and craft jewels.
  • Wide craft sticks
  • A low temp hot glue gun

Instructions

You and your child can design facial features using the loose parts. Try some different features out until you uncover the right fit for your puppet, then hot glue them to Mr. Heart Monster.

I have a low-temp hot glue gun that I am comfortable letting my 4.5 year old use independently, with supervision. He has not gotten seriously hurt, and absolutely loves using this real tool. You know your child and what they can handle.

This puppet is very Covid conscious and is wearing a mask to protect fellow community members.

I hope you have time to play with puppet making using this method. It has so many possibilities, and the dramatic play that ensues will be fun for the whole family. Enjoy!
